In a large pot, sauté the onions and garlic in olive oil until soft. Add salt, pepper, oregano, basil, and stir.
Add in tomato paste and water, bring to a simmer for 10 minutes.
Add tomato puree, crushed tomatoes, and sugar. Bring to a slow boil, then simmer over low heat for 2½-3 hours, stirring occasionally.

This marinara sauce can be used for any pasta dish or pizza. You may add browned sausage, meatballs, or chicken to the sauce for the last hour of cooking.
